Ohio County Development Authority Expected To Get Proposed Greg Stewart Contract This Week | News, Sports, Jobs

TRIADELPHIA The Ohio County Development Authority is expected to receive this week a proposed contract for Greg Stewart to manage The Highlands development.
Ohio County Commissioner Don Nickerson said a seven-member committee charged with negotiating the contract has met, and will present its recommendations to the full OCDA board soon, probably this week.
“We’re trying to get a meeting scheduled for Thursday,” he said. A time and date hasn’t yet been announced.
Nickerson could not reveal any details about the contract to be presented to the board.
“As nothing is final until adopted by the OCDA board, we have decided not to release the committee recommendation until presented to the board,” he said. ....

The Ohio County Commission approved a $1 million tax abatement for the city of Wheeling for the former Ohio Valley Medical Center campus.
WHEELING The city of Wheeling now doesn’t have to pay Ohio County more than $1 million in taxes owed on the former Ohio Valley Medical Center property, and the Ohio County Board of Education is on board with that.
The Ohio County Commission has approved a tax abatement of more than $1 million for the city of Wheeling, which assumed ownership of the former OVMC site in the summer of 2020.
As part of last year’s deal to acquire the former OVMC from previous owner Medical Properties Trust or MPT, the city agreed to pay legal and brokerage fees associated with the transaction, as well as any outstanding property taxes owed. ....

Ohio County Commissioners OK School Contract With Sheriff's Department | News, Sports, Jobs

WHEELING Ohio County commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved a prevention resource officer contract between the county and Ohio County Schools but with an added twist they see as beneficial to the school district.
Commission President Randy Wharton asked that commissioners include an amendment to the agreement that would give school district officials the right to interview new county-provided PROs before they are assigned to a school.
Commissioner Zach Abraham said he had requested such authority for the school district when he served as board of education president.
“I think that’s something they should have, unless someone thinks they would object to it,” Commissioner Don Nickerson said. ....

Crowded jails costing counties more than they can pay


West Virginia is incarcerating more people than its regional jail system is meant to hold, and it is costing some county governments more money than they can pay.
At least 10 counties in West Virginia are more than 90 days past due on a combined $9 million in jail bills, according to the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security. That agency covers the balance with taxpayer money when payments come up short.
From 2000 to 2019, West Virginia’s jail population increased by 81% according to a report by the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy. That follows a longer national trend, Quenton King, criminal justice policy analyst for the center, wrote in the report. ....
