An award-winning rodeo clown came back home for the Abbyville Frontier Days PRCA Rodeo this weekend. Justin Rumford, who was born in Abbyville, won the PRCA Clown of the Year award, a record-breaking nine times - from 2012 through 2020. Rumford, who is in high demand throughout the country, was excited to come home to where he started his rodeo career by following his father, rodeo legend Bronc Rumford around the circuit. Rumford s grandfather, Floyd Rumford along with his father Bronc, helped build the Abbyville Rodeo. It s now in its 59th year. Before becoming a rodeo clown, Rumford wrestled steer and rode saddle broncs, eventually ending up on a full scholarship to Northwestern Oklahoma State University. After graduation, he steer-wrestled nationwide in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. During that time, he realized he had a gift for making people laugh - so he tried his hand at being a rodeo clown, and since that day, he has not looked back. ....
Snake River Stampede Returns with Full Force It took a pandemic to cancel one of the longest-running rodeos in America last year, the Snake River Stampede. The Stampede has been entertaining Rodeo fans in Nampa, Idaho, for over 100 years. The Stampede is one of the largest in the world. The rodeo is back and with a vengeance, says organizers in a press release. The 2021 addition will feature action in not one but two venues. 2021 could feature the most collection of Cowboys and Cowgirl competitors than the Stampede has ever seen. Luke Gilford Takes Us to the Queer Rodeo In 19 Stunning Photos By Mikelle Street Though Luke Gilford is an internationally known photographer now, he grew up in Colorado with a father who was a chmpion in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. As a result, he spent his formative years around the rodeo a traditional Good Ole Boys club of toxic masculinity and homophobia. It took growing up to expand his horizons. His latest book, National Anthem, depicts the all-inclusive International Gay Rodeo Association, a family that Gilford has made himself a part of since first discovering it in 2016 in San Francisco. The rodeo has its own series of titles, and regional rodeos, and Gilford traveled the country (hitting Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and California) to document the subculture on medium-format film, printing his work in a traditional darkroom. ....
