Professor Robinson discusses one of the most important and puzzling political trends of our time, political polarization, and the social and economic changes that have caused polarization to increase in democratic politics in the 21st century. He examines the strain this is placing on democratic institutions and what implications these changes have for our understanding of democracy as a political system.

This week’s lesson focuses on the end of time. My initial intention was to address the differences between the Old Testament and New Testament perspectives. In short, the Old Testament envisions a
gradual end to evil, as in Isaiah 65:21, rather than a sudden and more thorough eradication of evil and suffering, as depicted in Revelation 21:3–4:
Isa. 65:21: No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed. ....
