Letters: There is no way Douglas Ross is fit to be First Minister

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross was tipped to be our next First Minister in The Herald this week by UK International Trade Secretary Liz Truss
YOU report that Liz Truss, the UK International Trade Secretary, suggests that “Douglas Ross will be the next First Minister of Scotland”, he being “fantastic” ( Scotland will reap huge benefits from trade deals, Liz Truss insists , The Herald, July 22). I submit that he is “a great guy”, another of her terms, only according to the debased standards of post-Brexit Johnsonian Conservatism.
In order to justify my assertion I suggest that your readers turn their minds back to the letter from John Dennis published on July 15 in which he pointed out that “all Scotland’s six Conservative MPs … voted to endorse the massive cuts of £4 billion in overseas aid”. ....

George Kerevan: Why George Galloway should stop using words like 'partition'

GEORGE Galloway continues to enliven this repetitious Holyrood election by trying to out-parody himself. His TV party-political broadcast last week saw him pontificate from behind an ornate desk in some baronial setting, complete with a framed picture of an imperialist Winston Churchill on the mantelpiece.
Naturally, Mr Galloway kept on his trademark homburg hat. Watching, I was easily distracted from his exaggerated delivery – every word separated from the next by a weird pause – by the thought that he keeps on the hat in bed while making love.
However, we should not completely dismiss the eccentric Mr Galloway. On a good day he can be an effective demagogue. His role in this election is to say what the main Unionist leaders are unwilling or afraid to say for themselves in public. Unless you count grumpy Adam Tomkins’s call for Scotland to be held in the Union by “something more robust” than mere democratic consent. Together, Mr Galloway and Professor Tomk ....

Breaking down Adam Tomkin's plans to curb democracy with new Act of Union

THE week before last Prof Ciaran Martin, a former UK civil servant who in his role as Cabinet Office Constitution Director (2011-2014) had helped negotiate the basis of the 2014 Scottish Referendum with the Scottish Government, gave a public lecture – Resist, Reform or Re-Run – at Oxford University (and did the media rounds afterwards) pointing out that if Boris Johnston simply refuses to grant a second independence referendum to a Scots Government elected with a mandate to hold such a referendum then he will be changing the Union of the United Kingdom from one based on consent to one that survives only by force of law. ....

Is Boris Johnson testing the waters by having Adam Tomkins talk of 'force'?

I’VE been reading some disturbing suggestions recently and never expected a member of parliament to come up with what Adam Tomkins came out with. To suggest that the UK use force to keep Scotland as part of the UK smacks of dictatorship rather than the democracy we are meant to be living in. I can of course understand an off-the-cuff remark from someone who is not as experienced politically as an MSP, or in Adam Tomkins case both a politician and a law professor.
Ireland is a prime example of what happens when you try and force a country to remain in a union they don’t want. It has been 100 years since the partition of Ireland and the fallout is still going on. Is that what Adam Tomkins and Douglas Ross really want, or is this another daft proposal by bonkers Boris given to one of his lackeys to see what the fall-out is like? ....
