Britain’s new polar research ship, the RSS Sir David Attenborough, has been formally presented with Lloyd s Register (LR) certification after a four-year-long construction period, the classification society said.
The high-profile vessel, the U.K.’s largest commercial newbuild for over 30 years, was delivered to Natural Environment Research Council and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) by Cammell Laird Shipbuilders. BAS undertake vital research in the polar regions, leading in polar science and polar operations, addressing issues of global importance and helping society adapt to a changing world.
The highly complex vessel is designed to support science in extreme environments. A wide range of specialist scientific facilities, instruments and laboratories enable scientists to conduct multidisciplinary sciences to study the ocean, seafloor, ice and atmosphere. ....

Iceberg about size of Greater London breaks off in Antarctica

It happened about a decade after scientists first observed huge cracks forming on the shelf.
BAS Director Professor Dame Jane Francis said that the scientists were expecting calving after monitoring the area with GPS devices and satellite imagery on a regular basis.
Our teams at BAS have been prepared for the calving of an iceberg from Brunt Ice Shelf for years, Francis said.
The iceberg is likely to either move away or run aground not far from the Brunt Ice Self, the director said.
A crack in the ice widened a lot early on Friday morning before the iceberg broke off entirely, news agency AFP reported. ....

On February 26, the British Antarctic Survey announced that a huge iceberg broke off of the Brunt Ice Shelf. The iceberg is around 492 feet thick and 490 square miles, which is larger than the size of New York City.

BAS’s Halley Research Station is a “platform for, atmospheric and space weather observation in a climate-sensitive zone” and is currently closed due to the Antarctic winter. Scientists at the station have been aware of cracks in the ice for over a decade. However, the first signs of a calving event were apparent in November 2020 after The North Rift, which is “the third major crack through the ice shelf to become active in the last decade.” Chasm 1 occurred in 2012 and the Halloween Crack occurred in 2016.
