West Africa Grassroots Frontline Human Rights Defenders End Regional Conference: Call for Protection

(Monrovia – 5 April 2021): A three-day Conference on the situation of Grassroots Frontline Environmental, Land and Human Right Defenders in West Africa opened on Monday, 29 March 2021 by way of the zoom technology. It was by all means a meeting of multidimensional profiles – with the high and the lowly in society interfacing. Credit to the Mano River Union Civil Society Natural Resource Rights and Governance Platform and its affiliate organization, Green Advocates International-Liberia, the progenitor of the initiative. 
The organizers succeeded in attracting four UN Special Rapporteurs to the conference including, the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights Defenders, Prof. Mary Lawlor; the UN Special Rapporteur for Indigenous Peoples, Prof. Francisco Cali Tzay; Dr. Anne Chabord, Legal Advisor to the UN Special Rapporteur on Countering Terrorism, and the UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rig ....

C.G. and Others group of cases against Bulgaria. These cases concern shortcomings in the system of judicial review of expulsion on national security grounds and detention pending such expulsion; failure to examine rigorously claims of risk of death and ill-treatment in the destination country; and the lack of a remedy with automatic suspensive effect to prevent expulsion when arguable claims are made of such risks. ....

On 17 February, following a hearing on “Problems of implementation by Ukraine of the ECHR judgments”, Parliament adopted two Recommendations concerning the execution by Ukraine of ECHR judgments and the reform of the system of execution of domestic judgments.
1 The following three groups of ECHR judgments were identified as main priorities for execution:

Impunity for killings of human rights defenders remains a key driver for more murders, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders tells Human Rights Council

The Human Rights Council this morning started an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders. It also concluded its interactive dialogues with the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief and the Special Rapporteur on protecting human rights while countering terrorism.
Mary Lawlor, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, said that in 2019, at least 281 human rights defenders, including 38 women human rights defenders, had been killed in 35 countries, and unless radical action was taken the killings would continue. Impunity for killings remain ....
