But these are not typical times, and the Valparaiso resident was pulled in recently to take over as pod manager at the health department s COVID-19 vaccine site on the grounds of the Porter County Expo Center.

As the pandemic spread across the world creating countless problems, Fred Geyer possessed a solution in Northwest Indiana.
N95 masks, vital to protecting health care workers exposed to the coronavirus, were in short global supply, and his business, American Melt Blown & Filtration, already produced the filtration for the short-supplied N95 masks made in other countries. So why not create the entire masks in the Hoosier state?
That question led to the creation of a new company: Indiana Face Mask. This December, out of thousands of submissions, the company was one of only five nationwide to receive CDC approval to manufacture N95s. A significant achievement as the majority of N95s were made overseas prior to the pandemic. ....

The year 2020 brought the world a crisis unlike any in our lifetimes. As the COVID pandemic took hold, it devastated economies, left a tragic number of dead around the world and wreaked havoc on culture and society. Sadly, Northwest Indiana has not been exempt from the toll of COVID-19.
But disasters and crises often bring out the best in people, prompting disparate groups to come together for the common good. As a health care provider, Methodist Hospitals has been at the forefront of the pandemic. Over the last year, our doctors, nurses and staff have seen the worst effects of the virus. A year of dealing with the deadliest pandemic to hit the United States in a century has tested and toughened Region hospitals, health care systems, clinics, and medical professionals. COVID-19 has prepared them to deal with the worst in the future, led them to innovate and caused them to rethink how they provide care.
