Maine Farmland Trust among recipients of land protection grant

Maine Farmland Trust, in Belfast, is one of eight nonprofit organizations across the state to share a $250,000 grant from Maine Community Foundation’s Maine Land Protection grant program.
Launched last year, the program provides grants for land acquisition or land conservation easement projects.
The Trust will use its $20,000 share to purchase an easement on the new home of Liberation Farms, a cooperative farm led by the Somali Bantu Community Association and their members, according to Maine CF, in a news release. ....

‘Hands Around the Capitol’ is canceled
AUGUSTA The “Hands Around the Capitol” event, scheduled for the statehouse on Saturday, Jan. 23, has been canceled due to safety concerns.
The event has been held annually for 47 years since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion. Participants rally, march and encircle the statehouse to pray that all will come to realize the value of human life from conception to natural death.

Hills to Sea Trail Coalition, of Unity, is one of 18 Maine nonprofit organizations sharing in $206,000 worth of grants through the Conservation for All program within Maine Community Foundation.
Hills will use its $10,000 share for general operations to maintain programs, volunteers, part-time staff person and improvements to the Hills to Sea Trail.
Launched last year, the Conservation for All grant program provides general support grants to organizations and projects that build strong connections between people in Maine and our land and water. ....

Downeast Innovation Fund awards $95,000 in grants
ELLSWORTH The Maine Community Foundation’s Downeast Innovation Fund has awarded $95,000 in grants to 11 nonprofits located in or serving Hancock and Washington counties.
Launched in 2018, the Downeast Innovation Fund Grant program supports nonprofit organizations that provide programs to improve or increase entrepreneurship and innovation in business and the local economies in Hancock and Washington counties.
The 2020 grantees include:
City of Ellsworth, to enhance targeted programming and technical infrastructure aimed at graduating existing start-up companies, while attracting new, quality companies to the Union River Center for Innovation.
Four Directions Development Corp., Orono, to establish a new Native small business Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) serving Washington County and the Wabanaki tribes of Maine. ....
