Friendship Centre opens up as cold weather shelter as minus-30 weekend nears

It s a place for those who need a warm place to rest their head - blankets, pillows, mats, all that is available as well, said Amanda Fleury, housing coordinator for the Friendship Centre. Fleury is the lead organizer of the shelter.

“We have sweaters, we have socks, we have gloves, we have mitts, we have scarves. We’ll go and drive around - no particular spots, no particular day, and if we see someone who needs a coat, we’ll give it to them,” said Collacott.
According to data from a 2011 Urban Aboriginal Knowledge Network study on homelessness in Flin Flon, the city has a higher than average population of homeless people - at any given point, that number would be around 100 people, including people living in vehicles, couch surfing or staying at the Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre hostel.
