The New Orleans parade known as the Krewe of Jeanne d’Arc rolls every year on January 6th Joan of Arc’s birthday, and also the day that the Carnival season begins. The small walking parade usually winds through a crowded, glittering French Quarter. Marchers playact Joan’s biography, adorned in medieval attire with beautifully handcrafted props symbolizing her journey to sainthood. It’s a lively and loving celebration of female heroism, spiritual fortitude in the face of ruthless authority, and the city’s French history. ....

Lego figures, local legends and the pandemic have inspired float houses.
When New Orleans mayor announced that the city s legendary Carnival parades would be canceled on account of Covid-19, Megan Boudreaux wasn t surprised.
Like so many, the mom and insurance manager had known in her gut that the weekslong fête would take 2021 off. Revelers of all ages packed at least three deep along routes that wind for miles seemed the textbook antithesis of social distancing.
So, I kinda made a comment: Well, that s fine, I m just going to decorate my house, said Boudreaux, who invited her neighbors to turn their homes, too, into stationary versions of the ornately designed floats that populate the four dozen or so parades that roll in the city each year. Mayor Orders New Orleans Bars Closed For Mardi Gras, Along With Bourbon And Frenchmen Streets

The closures begin Feb. 12 and will last through Fat Tuesday.
The closures include bars that serve food using a conditional permit from the state to operate as a restaurant. Bars and restaurants will not be able to sell to-go drinks either. Packaged liquor sales will be banned in the French Quarter.
A section of Decatur Street in the French Quarter will be closed and the Claiborne Avenue underpass will be fenced off.
Police officers will be standing by barricades at intersections along Bourbon and Frenchmen streets. The barricades will be in place between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. Decatur Street will be closed from Dumaine Street to Toulouse Street. Officers will allow residents, retail customers, restaurant patrons and hotel guests to go to and from their destinations in the French Quarter, but loitering will not be permitted. ....

Thousands of New Orleans residents turn their own homes into Mardi Gras floats after the city cancels this year s festival amid the COVID pandemic
Tens of thousands of people usually pack into downtown New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras in February and March each year
City officials have cancelled this year s festivities amid the COVID-19 pandemic 
But many locals are refusing to let the pandemic dampen their party spirit, and are now turning their homes into parade floats to bring color and flair to the city 
More than 9,000 people have joined the Krewe of House Floats Facebook page and are in the process of transforming their homes into eye-catching displays   ....

Winn-Dixie to celebrate Mardi Gras with community partnerships


Winn-Dixie is celebrating Mardi Gras with not one but two partnerships.
The retailer announced that it will join forces with Ochsner Hospital for Children and Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club to celebrate the distinct culture and traditions of the holiday amid the pandemic.
“Winn-Dixie is extremely proud of our 65-year history in Louisiana and our valued partnerships with dedicated organizations like Ochsner and Zulu. These two local institutions are woven into the fabric of Louisiana’s rich culture with a commitment to community that is evident in their great work of caring and serving,” said Joey Medina, regional vice president at Winn-Dixie. “As we commemorate decades of tradition, we look forward to honoring the unique values and diverse heritage of this exceptional state with incredibly resilient people.” ....
