A Steeper Tariff on Canadian Softwood Lumber Is Not the Solution

Despite lumber prices soaring to a record high of $1,670.50 per thousand board feet, and the housing market booming at a 17.2% price increase from April 2020, the U.S. Commerce Department, rather than helping, plans to impose further burdens on U.S. consumers through increased taxes on imported softwood lumber.
On Friday, the Department of Commerce announced its proposal to more than double tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber to 18.32%, from 8.99%. This dramatic increase, while not yet in effect, creates uncertainty and fear, while simultaneously undermining economic prospects for both the United States and Canada as these countries attempt to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

Lumber firms applaud, home builders angry as U.S. moves to double Canadian lumber tariffs

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Commerce says it will seek to double tariff rates on most Canadian softwood lumber, angering home builders.
New rates vary by company. West Fraser goes from 9 percent to 11.4 percent, Canfor from 4.6 to 21 percent, Resolute Forest from 20.3 to 30.2 percent, and J.D. Irving from 4.2 to 15.8 percent.
The overall increase is from 9 percent to 18.32 percent.
Home builders, who had been urging for a removal of tariffs, expressed their disappointment.
“At a time when soaring lumber prices have added nearly $36,000 to the price of a new home and priced millions of middle class households out of the housing market, the Biden administration’s preliminary finding to double the tariffs on Canadian lumber shipments shows the White House does not care about the plight of American home buyers and renters who have been forced to pay much higher costs for housing, said National Association of Home Builders chairman Chuck Fowke. ....

WASHINGTON, May 21, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The U.S. Department of Commerce today issued its preliminary determination in the second administrative review of softwood lumber imports from Canada, and once again confirmed that Canadian imports are heavily subsidized and dumped into the U.S. market by issuing a combined anti-subsidy and anti-dumping duty rate of 18.32%.
