International Women’s Day is set aside to celebrate women globally. Each year an annual International Women’s Day campaign theme is celebrated and continues all year long to unify direction and galvanize activity by providing a meaningful framework to connect and amplify the action, according to the International Women’s Day website.
With this year’s theme, “Choose to challenge,” we look at four Liberian women who are challenging status-quo and transforming the narrative on Liberian women. We would be remiss to acknowledge that Liberian women have been trailblazers in their own right, predating the Republic of Liberia itself. Nobles County administrator proud of achievements during tenure

WORTHINGTON When Nobles County Administrator Tom Johnson announced to commissioners in a closed session Tuesday morning that he would be retiring at the end of April, it didn’t come as a surprise.
Johnson had begun talking about his impending departure a year and a half ago, when the county hired a deputy county administrator in a dual role as emergency management director.
“March (2021) was a speculative date a year and a half ago,” Johnson said Wednesday.
In the position for slightly more than eight years he started in February 2013 Johnson said it’s time to see his kids and grandkids more often. He and his wife have five grown children, scattered across the country from Utah to Georgia, and 10 grandchildren. ....

WORTHINGTON Nobles County commissioners on Tuesday adopted a policy regarding the implementation and use of body-worn cameras by the Nobles County Sheriff’s Office.
The action followed a public hearing in which no testimony was given. Sheriff Kent Wilkening said he had not received any written testimony during the public comment period, and requested the policy’s adoption.
Wilkening said he plans to purchase 10 cameras, which had been budgeted for, at a cost of approximately $18,000.
Commissioner Donald Linssen asked how long the audio-video must be retained by the department, and whether additional staffing was required to upload the data to the server. ....

WORTHINGTON Six weeks into his new role as Nobles County’s drainage systems coordinator, Zach Reker is grateful for the unseasonable weather that has kept him outdoors rather than at his desk most days.
The mild temperatures have made it possible for the county to continue to work on ditch projects including the replacement of 1,000 feet of 10-inch tile on Judicial Ditch 12 in Bloom Township, cleaning out 2.5-foot-deep sediment from a 2,000-foot stretch of the open Judicial Ditch 8 in Elk Township and completing a clean-out of County Ditch 4 near the Herlein-Boote Slough in Worthington Township. ....
