Coronavirus: How Canada is working to ensure homeless people get vaccinated for COVID-19

Prioritization is already underway after Montreal public health officials began to administer vaccines to the cityâs homeless population last month. Officials there stress health-care workers and long-term care residents remain a top priority.
Last month, Toronto followed suit, launching a pilot project to vaccinate people in 100 shelters in the city. Dr. Stephen Hwang of St. Michael s Hospital, which is helping run the project with the city and several other organizations, said the initial rollout was, overall, a resounding success.â
The goal is to develop a playbook so that we can have a plan that we can go out to immunize people in shelters across the city, he told the Canadian Press in January. ....

Toronto has long had a deficiency of safe indoor public spaces for those experiencing homelessness to access during the cold winter season, and a new study demonstrates just how much this issue has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project, called Changes in informal access to selected indoor public spaces in Toronto and carried out by MAP Centre For Urban Health Solutions, looks at five different types of public indoor spaces 24-hour restaurants, warming centres, libraries/community centres, drop-ins, and Out of the Colds and uses maps to show how many were lost during the 2020/2021 winter season. ....

DOH Secretary-Designate Dr. Tracie Collins on Wednesday announced the appointment of Dr. Laura Chanchien Parajon as Deputy Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Health. Dr. Parajon is on leave as Executive Director for Community Health and Assistant Professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine, at the University of New Mexico.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Parajon to the team,” said Dr. Collins. “Her expertise, experience, and compassion will be an asset to the state – especially now.”
“My goal is always to work towards health for all people. For me, this means listening to communities and their priorities, building from their strengths and resources, and taking action together to serve everyone – especially the most vulnerable,” said Dr. Parajon. ....
