1871  –City of Birmingham founded; now the state’s most populous city, Birmingham was founded at the crossing of two rail lines near one of the world’s richest deposits of minerals.
1873 Birmingham becomes seat of Jefferson County.
–First Colored Baptist Church founded.
Birmingham particularly hard hit by cholera due to the lack of urban infrastructure and the poor housing conditions. At least 128 people died from cholera, which struck in the height of summer and persisted for several weeks. The outbreak caused about half of Birmingham’s 4,000 residents to flee.
1874 – Birmingham Iron Age newspaper in publication.

Even a decade later, it seems hard to believe.
The tornado outbreak of April 27, 2011 cemented itself in the consciousness of every Alabamian who experienced it. Two waves of deadly storms battered the state over the course of one day, leaving broken cities, twisted wreckage and lost lives.
Looking at the statistics gives only the barest idea of what occurred. The deadly weather system was part of a three-day outbreak that was the worst of its kind in U.S. history. Alabama saw 62 tornadoes. Twenty-nine of them left storm tracks covering more than 690 miles. ....

Pastor T.L. Lewis recalls tornadoes that devastated Alabama 10 years ago this month

“Everywhere you looked, there was devastation.”
So recalled Dr. T.L. Lewis, the longtime pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham’s Pratt City community.
“From one end of Pratt City to the other, lives were lost, homes and businesses were destroyed. Our church was leveled to the foundation.”
But in the immediate aftermath of the deadly tornado that struck early on the evening of April 27, 2011, the destruction of his church was secondary to meeting human needs, Lewis said.
“Some people lost everything they had, including their clothes. Starting that night, we knew we had to get busy getting people what they needed just to survive.” ....
