Datebook: After A COVID Year, Steampunk Fest Marks The Return Of Whimsy

is happening June 4-5 in downtown Bloomington.
For Event co-chair Candace Summers, the timing couldn’t be better.
“This is probably one of the first major outdoor festival-type activities that the community has had (since the pandemic began),” Summers said. “A lot of us are vaccinated, getting vaccinated, we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, so I really think it s a way to kind of celebrate that we’re making it through it.”
Making it through, but not totally out of the woods yet so the event will look a little different this year. ....

Bloomington Election Commission Director Departs

The Bloomington Election Commission is looking for a new director.
Elections commissioner Kim Kiser said Friday that previous director Tim Mitchell chose to take another job opportunity.
Mitchell held the position for about 15 months. He was chosen after longtime director Paul Shannon retired. Before taking the job, Mitchell was a member of the board overseeing the commission and its director. Kiser replaced Mitchell on that board. The other two commissioners are Denise Williams and Bob Felton. They both have three-year staggered terms. Kiser s term expires next year.
Kiser said the board will meet June 2 to talk about the process to find a new director. ....

McHistory: Bowles Street Named For The 'Old Singing Soldier' With The Medicine Wagon

The National Kidney and Liver Cure was made in Normal.
Production of patent or quack medicine was at its regional center in Bloomington-Normal during the Civil War and into the 20th century.
One of the most popular medicines was made in Normal off of Normal Avenue at the home (which also served as the factory) of Joseph W. Bowles. Said to be a blood purifier that could cure it all from headaches to nervousness, the National Liver and Kidney Cure sold for $1.
Known as the “Old Singing Soldier,” Bowles eventually brought on his son and daughter to work for him. They traveled the area selling the cure via medicine wagon. The National Liver and Kidney Cure was said to be made from vegetables and herbs and may have had some alcohol in it for an extra kick. ....

Bloomington To Reopen All City Facilities First Week Of June

The Bloomington City Council meets remotely, Monday, May 10, 2021.
Bloomington plans to reopen all city facilities June 1 or 2 as part of the state’s bridge to Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois Plan, City Manager Tim Gleason told the city council on Monday.
Gov. JB Pritzker announced last week the month-long “bridge” will begin Friday. The transition aims to return Illinois to normal operations and capacities by June 11.
In other pandemic-related news, Gleason told the council the first half of Bloomington’s $14 million due from the latest federal COVID-relief package arrives this week, and the state will begin a rental assistance grant program next week. The council voted unanimously to eliminate late payment penalties for water bills through Phase 4. ....

Old enough to remember the GOP being ran by sane, reasonable individuals who could differeniate between personal ethos and the doable.
Now, it’s like they are trying to see who can shoot themselves in the foot the quickest.
Good to see a couple of principled Republicans on the country board. Sounds like the GOP majority, however, wants to gerrymander county board seats the same way they denounce Democrats for doing with legislative and congressional districts. In other words, do as we say, not as we do.
Could these “private” meetings be in violation of the Open Meetings Act? This does not surprise me in that the OLD order feels threatened. Nothing like a bunch of old white guys who feel threatened by the changing world. Time for Coach Mac to chuck it in. ....
