What is the WGLT Friends Council?
The WGLT Friends Council is a diverse group of people from the communities we serve who value independent, public radio and who have committed time and resources to further WGLT s mission.
The main purpose of the Council is to increase the financial well being of WGLT to insure its ongoing operation. Additional activities include advocacy, and the opportunity for WGLT staff to solicit and receive advisory opinions from a group that represents community perspectives.
The WGLT Friends Council meets quarterly. Meeting minutes are available by request. Please email your request.

After the atrocities against people of color in 2020, Chicago-based experimental sound artist Allen Moore wanted to find a way to mark the moment.
“I think it’s important to make a statement and make work about what’s going on, what is happening during this pandemic,” he said.
Moore’s statement takes the form of a free sonic arts performance streaming live at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 24.
Moore said many people were forced to grapple with the reality of racism in 2020 something he was all too familiar with while growing up.
“I was talked to and told as a young man, before I was even 10, when I was really young, about the importance of my skin and what I’m doing and not doing,” he said. “Specifically I remember I had a toy gun and my aunt said, ‘You cannot walk around with that in public.’” ....

Uptown Vigil Honors, Celebrates Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Lives

Candles, testimonies and support filled Uptown Circle on Friday evening in solidarity with Asian American and Pacific Islander community members. The organizations Not in Our School and ISU’s AsiaConnect hosted a vigil to remember the lives of the eight people who died in a shooting spree in Atlanta.
During the vigil NIOS students shared their experiences of discrimination along with other figures in the community and music selections from University High Chamber Orchestra. One of the organizers, Aditi Sharma, started off the vigil on what hope looks like for her in the future.
“Only with our resilience will we be able to transform our world into one where love and compassion are the new normal. Where no one has to face hardship just for who they are. Where no one has to lose their life because of their skin color, their religion, their sexuality, their identity,” Sharma said. ....
