Prominent McLean County labor leader passes away at age 82
MCLEAN COUNTY (HOI) One of the county s most prominent labor leaders is being remembered for his many decades of community service.
Ronn Morehead, who was president of the Bloomington and Normal Trades and Labor Assembly for 40 years, died Saturday morning. He was 82.
Starting as a construction laborer, Morehead helped workers during plant closings and layoffs, and created training opportunities for job retention.
He also supervised a summer youth employment program for many years.
Morehead served on many communities, including the Illinois Special Olympics board, and he was one of the organizers of the annual children’s Christmas party for unemployed families. ....

Bloomington Attorney Donates 1854 Lincoln Letter To Museum

Abraham Lincoln, (1809 - 1865), the 16th President of the United States of America.
A Bloomington attorney and Lincoln scholar has given an 1854 letter Lincoln wrote to a Peoria attorney to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Presidential Museum in Springfield.
Guy Fraker said the missive is a response to Ian Powell s message to Lincoln that Lincoln s attempt to gain a U.S. Senate seat was illegal. At the time, state lawmakers chose senators. Lincoln was in the Statehouse and Fraker said he would have been voting for himself. Powell was a Whig and a political ally of Lincoln s.
Powell advised him he d better resign from the House of Representatives. And so he said, and I love this little twist that he added in there. He said, Acting on your advice and my own judgment. In other words, he was not willing to admit entirely that he didn t know that, said Fraker. ....

Juneteenth is observed on June 19. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army, issued an order informing enslaved people in Texas that they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued years earlier. Rising calls for racial justice have led more people and organizations to recognize Juneteenth. In 2021, Illinois lawmakers approved making it a state holiday.
The 21st was joined by three guests to talk about Juneteenth as a state holiday; how people are celebrating; and the commercialization of the day.

is happening June 4-5 in downtown Bloomington.
For Event co-chair Candace Summers, the timing couldn’t be better.
“This is probably one of the first major outdoor festival-type activities that the community has had (since the pandemic began),” Summers said. “A lot of us are vaccinated, getting vaccinated, we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, so I really think it s a way to kind of celebrate that we’re making it through it.”
Making it through, but not totally out of the woods yet so the event will look a little different this year. ....
