(KEYC) National Signing Day is here and although it looks a little different, area schools did their best to honor those student-athletes continuing to play at the next level. At Mankato East High School, star football player Eli Olson signed his National Letter of Intent to play at the University of Minnesota Duluth. ”I’m just excited to know I get to play four or five more years. UMD is a great program, great culture, great coaches. It’s going to be a great place to go up to, keep working, get better every day and see where it takes me.” ....
Goals Aplenty as Owatonna Sweeps Century Owatonna hockey players shared the wealth on Tuesday in a sweep of Rochester Century. The OHS boys prevailed 9-2 at Graham Arena with ten players getting at least one point. Ashton Hoffman scored his first varsity goal. Eleven players had at least a point in the girls 8-0 victory over Century/JM at Four Seasons Centre. Century has won the last three league titles, but Tuesday was their fourth straight loss. Owatonna has finished second in the conference standings the last two seasons and was third three seasons ago. ....
Huskies Sweep Falcons [Prep Roundup, Monday Feb. 1] The Owatonna High School girls and boys basketball teams had to battle through lineup limitations but earned a sweep over Faribault in Big Nine basketball Monday, February 1. Sarah Kingland fouled out with five minutes remaining in a 61-51 victory at Nomeland Gymnasium in Faribault. The boys had a couple of starters limited due to injury but still beat the Falcons at OHS 69-43. The Owatonna girls went on a 12-0 run in the first half after a hot start by Faribault from three-point range staked the Falcons to an 18-13 lead. After hitting five of their first seven three-point shots, Faribault was 3-for-17 for the rest of the game, according to AM 1390 KRFO stats. ....

(KEYC) â The Mankato East-Loyola boysâ hockey program owns a 3-and-1 record to start the 2021 season, as the team looks to defend the Section 1A title. The Cougars returned their senior core - Layten Liffrig, Jacob Schreiber, JD Kragh, Brett Borchardt and Hayden Guillemette - who helped lead the team to obtain two section titles in three years, along with a state tournament appearance last year. âLast year we talked about, after we won the section championship, super hard to win a section championship with five forwards and two or three defensemen,â Head Coach Adam Fries said. ....
Huskies, Raiders Battle for Big Nine Lead Owatonna and Northfield battle for the Big Nine Conference lead this week. That sentiment could refer to any of several sports. But, most notably in girls hockey, both teams enter play with unbeaten records on Thursday, January 28 for a game at the Northfield Ice Arena. Play-by-play coverage is on AM 1390 KRFO, which is now simulcasting at 94.7 FM as well. Owatonna (4-0) is averaging a staggering eight goals per game and has allowed just five total goals. Northfield (3-0) has scored about six goals per game, while surrendering only two total goals. The Huskies and Raiders shared the conference title in the 2019-2020 season. Northfield beat Owatonna in the section playoffs last winter. ....
