In their search for the next superintendent, the Mattituck-Cutchogue Board of Education didn’t have to look very far.
Shawn Petretti, the principal at Mattituck Junior-Senior High School, will be formally appointed as superintendent at a meeting June 10, board of education president Barbara Wheaton announced Thursday.
“The board of education is confident of his proven leadership, his commitment to the community, educational connections and his overall desire to do what is best for all students, faculty, parents and community,” Ms. Wheaton said. “This appointment is the right decision for the future success of our school district.” ....

School board races announced in Mattituck-Cutchogue, Greenport

Contested school board races have been announced in both the Mattituck-Cutchogue and Greenport school districts. And with an incumbent stepping down, there will be at least one new member in each district next school year.
In Mattituck-Cutchogue, six candidates submitted petitions to run for the Board of Education prior to Monday’s deadline. Longtime school board member Doug Cooper and fellow incumbent Jeffrey Connolly will seek new terms when voters head to the polls May 18. Current board president Barbara Wheaton will not run again.
That leaves at least one of three open seats up for grabs with four newcomers seeking a spot. District residents Aleksandra Kardwell, Karen Letteriello, Edward Marlatt and Denise Taormina all submitted petitions. ....

Two years ago, Greg Doroski of Mattituck came up just 117 votes shy of ousting incumbent town Supervisor Scott Russell from office.
Now, he’s returning to local politics in a run for one of two open seats on the Town Board in November’s election.
“I feel called to do the hard work required to preserve the irreplaceable character of our community,” Mr. Doroski said as the Southold Town Democratic Committee announced its slate of candidates at a virtual convention Tuesday. ....
