Flagler Schools Will Keep Mask Rules In Effect, Making them Voluntary in Summer

Students in Flagler County schools will be required to continue with masking, as a safety precaution, until the end of the school year. Once summer programs start, masks will be optional. (Flagler Schools)
The Flagler County school district today reiterated that its masking requirement in all schools will stay in place until the end of the regular school year. The requirement will be lifted at the beginning of summer school, when masking will become voluntary. Masking will remain voluntary when the next school year begins in August, unless the district experiences significant spikes in infections, in which case masking requirements may be reinstituted. ....

Sheriff Rick Staly visited three local schools on April 28 to present three exceptional students with awards for being “Great Kids.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of the youth in this county, as they’re excelling in ways that will allow them to prosper in their adulthood, Staly said. The recipients of this month’s Great Kids award have shown great leadership, positivity in all aspects of their educational careers and respect towards their peers, teachers and community. I’m honored to be able to recognize this group of Flagler County students and know they’ll continue to represent this community in remarkable ways.” ....

Two of Matanzas High School's best and brightest reflect on social media and their generation

Ethan Drost, a junior at Matanzas High School, is in the AICE program, vice president of the Pirates Athletic Committee, a member of JROTC, and he will be the next president of the Leo Club.
Oh, and he can also run a mile in 5 minutes, 30 seconds.

Drost and his friend Sarah Flannery were chosen for Boys State and Girls State this year from Matanzas High School.
Flannery, a senior, has been president of the Leo Club for the past two years. She’s also in the National Honor Society, vice president of the Math Club, volunteered for eight months at the Emergency Department at AdventHealth, works at Winn-Dixie on the weekends, and she played varsity soccer. ....

Flagler Tiger Bay Club awards $20,000 to five graduating seniors

The Flagler Tiger Bay Club Scholarship Committee announced five scholarship winners, totaling more than $20,000.
Led by Scholarship Committee Chairman Gary Walsh, committee members evaluated a number of scholarship applications, selecting Flagler Palm Coast High School senior Reilly Maresca, and Matanzas High School seniors Brianna Whitfield, Jessica Slusarz, Hope Singleton and Lovie Haley, based on guidelines established by the organization in 2019.
“As an organization, we had developed criteria that would emphasize the mission of Flagler Tiger Bay, so that we would be choosing applicants that showed interest in engaging in community activities and a desire to engage in future studies and careers in the areas of government, law, criminal justice, not for profit work, community service and related areas,” said Walsh. ....
