Pharmacist sent to prison for trying to destroy COVID-19 vaccines | 1310 WIBA

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) - A pharmacist was sentenced to prison time Tuesday for trying to spoil COVID-19 vaccines last year,
Steven R. Brandenburg, 46, of Grafton, was sentenced to three years in prison. He previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

Brandenburg, a former pharmacist at Advocate Aurora Health, was arrested in December after authorities said he deliberately left COVID-19 vaccine vials out of refrigeration. Authorities said he left vials out two nights in a row and returned them to refrigeration each morning.
Before the Brandenburg's conduct was discovered, authorities initially said 57 people received doses left out of refrigeration. Prosecutors said it was unclear if the vaccines had actually spoiled.

MADISON (WKOW) - Those looking to catch a glimpse of the partial solar eclipse will want to get up bright and early.
The process will begin as early as 3:53am however, it won't be visible until the sun begins to rise; those looking to catch the early morning partial eclipse will want to turn their attention to the northeast around 5:20am. That's when the eclipse will be at its max where 35% of the sun will be covered.
The entire eclipse should last only 20 or so minutes. Though this will not be a total solar eclipse, those looking to catch the event should remember to not look directly into the sun.

Madison FD receives first all-electric fire engine in North America | 1310 WIBA

MADISON (WKOW) -- The city of Madison took another step Tuesday toward a more sustainable future.
The firstPierce Volterrazero-emissions pumper has been placed in service with the City of Madison Fire Department, making this the first electric fire truck in service in North America. It reduces emissions, minimizes fuel consumption, and produces less noise.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says the new technology brings the city one step closer toward its goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030.
"We're looking to support the Wisconsin economy while we also go carbon free," said the Mayor. "I'm really optimistic about our ability to getting 100% of our fleet, and we'll have to do that if we're going to meet our carbon goals here."

Authorities identify UTV driver killed in Green County crash | 1310 WIBA

UPDATE (WKOW) -- The Green County Sheriff's Office has identified the person killed in a UTV crash Tuesday.
Authorities said Patrick Davis, 68, of Monroe died after flipped into a ditch just south of Monroe High School.
MONROE (WKOW) -- Green County Sheriff's Office released Tuesday a male UTV driver died after flipping into a ditch just south of Monroe High School.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on 30th Street near the border of Monroe and Clarno Township.
Deputies found the victim beneath the UTV. He was taken to The Monroe Clinic to be treated.
WI DNR wardens are investigating the crash. Initial findings show the UTV. had been traveling northbound on Jeffery Rd. in Clarno Township, left the roadway while attempting to negotiate a left hand curve onto 30th Street and overturned.

UnityPoint Health-Meriter employees protest vacation policy | 1310 WIBA

MADISON (WKOW) -- A group of UnityPoint Health-Meriter employees were joined by community leaders and elected officials in protest of the hospital system's vacation hours policy.
Union employees like food service and environmental service workers say they've risked their lives to keep the hospital running.
They gathered outside the hospital late Thursday afternoon.
The group is upset Meriter's parent company UnityPoint Health made nearly $276 million in profits, but executives are unwilling to give employees additional time off to recover from the pandemic. The hospital system includes dozens of hospitals in Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. Meriter made $67.8 million, which represents a 4.1% operating margin.
