Tax credit for affordable rental housing considered by state lawmakers


SOUTH JACKSONVILLE Even with Social Security, her late husband’s pension as a former Jacksonville police chief and her own pension, Wanda Irlam says she would have a hard time paying rent for most two-bedroom apartments.
“I think it would be very hard to find a place,” said Irlam, 84, a retired school food service worker who lives in the Jacksonville Affordable Housing development. “This is just a good place to live, and it’s very affordable and very safe.”
Her $382-a-month rent, which covers water and sewer service in this Morgan County village adjacent to Jacksonville and 36 miles west of Springfield, compares with other rents for similar apartments in the area that can cost $800 or more per month. ....

Ex-Illinois Secretary of State administrator sentenced in fraud case


A former Illinois Secretary of State office administrator and supervisor of vehicle services was sentenced last week for her part in defrauding that office and the Illinois Department of Revenue of nearly $350,000.
Candace Wanzo, 58, of Centralia, was sentenced to 18 months each on two counts of theft and one count of fraud in federal court in Springfield. The sentences will be served concurrently.
Wanzo pleaded guilty in November. A second count of fraud and a third count of theft were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
Wanzo was ordered to pay more than $72,500 in restitution.
Wanzo resigned from her office in 2018, a year after she was placed on administrative leave and an investigation was opened up against by the Secretary of State s office. ....

As Publishing Perspectives readers will recall, the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation was formed in 1985 by the late Hungarian photographer Andor Kraszna-Krausz the founder in 1938 of the Focal Press, an imprint of Taylor & Francis/Routledge based in media tech books.
Its 2021 Photography Book Award and Moving Image Book Award shortlists have been announced today from London (May 4). Winners are to be named on June 1 and 3, in association with London’s The Photographers’ Gallery near Covent Garden. ....
