'Ill-served' Johnson 'unwisely' agreed to flat refurb but did not break ministerial code

BORIS Johnson was ill-served by officials over the funding plans for his lavish Downing Street flat refurbishment, but did not breach the ministerial code.
According to a report by his new adviser on ministerial standards Lord Geidt, the Prime Minister unwisely allowed the go-ahead for the renovations at No.11 Downing Street without more rigorous regard for how it would be paid for.
His report also says that Mr Johnson did not know how the costs of the work were covered, and that they had been paid for by Tory peer Lord Brownlow, until shortly before they were first reported by the media. ....

Prime Minister Boris Johnson “unwisely” allowed the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat to go ahead without “more rigorous regard for how this would be funded”.
Lord Geidt, the new adviser on ministerial standards, released his first report on ministers’ interests on Friday, after months of delay.
He said Mr Johnson had not broken the ministerial code but might reasonably have been expected to be curious about the financial arrangements.
Lord Geidt also found there had been a “significant failing” from officials in how “rigorous” they were at examining the idea of setting up a trust to fund renovations to Downing Street. ....
