WATCH: Trinity discusses Irish partition and its legacies

Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute are hosting two fantastic online events with an array of excellent speakers on Friday, May 7, 2021.
This special centenary joint symposium will address the cultural, political and social legacies of the Irish partition in 1921. The symposium consists of two panels: the first, from Trinity College, Dublin, will discuss the cultural and literary legacies of partition; the second, from Queen’s University, Belfast, will cover the political and social consequences. 
Each speaker will present for ten minutes and each, followed by audience Q and A
The first panel titled 
Partition and its Legacies: Cultural and Literary Legacies will be chaired by Ciaran O Neill and speakers include Stephen O’Neill, Guy Woodward, and Eve Patten.  ....

Arts events are slowly beginning to bloom, both IRL and online. While it may be April Fools Day, these five offerings are seriously worth a look. We may not be where we d like to be with in-person events yet, but let s hear it for the artists and venues who have met the Zoom challenge with innovation, thoughtfulness, and lots of heart. As our college town grows nearer to the end of the spring semester, give a little extra love to all of the arts students who managed to create magic in the midst of mayhem.

This was the year when the arts proved they are essential through their absence. No crass campaign was needed to prove value for money, and we experienced the arts as human necessity required to make life liveable.
Without a fully functioning arts world we were thrown back on ourselves and into other forms of creativity. Bread-making has been recognised as an art form of sorts and it certainly sustains, but the essence of art, as Rilke described it change, transition and transmutation is the real nourishment we need to get through difficult times and the tough days ahead. ....

The 2021 James Ford lectures on Ireland, Empire and the Early Modern World were delivered online by Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Trinity College Dublin. The Ford Lectures in British and Irish History were first delivered in 1896-7 under a bequest from James Ford. Since then they have been delivered annually by a distinguished historian in Oxford.
