How much is a human life worth? On the fringes of forests and protected areas in rural India, it can be valued up to six times less than crops or livestock, a new study shows.
For the study, out recently and published by the US National Academy of Sciences, scientists from the University of British Columbia, the Centre for Wildlife Studies in Bengaluru and Duke University have used statistical methods to estimate what the “human cost” of conflict with wildlife should be and then compared it with what states actually hand out. The difference, they found, is huge.
“I do not know if states have a well-defined method for determining this compensation. Nevertheless, it is clear we do not have a consistent mechanism determining these payments across states in India,” lead author Sumeet Gulati told TOI.
