The Monroe Township School District’s first female superintendent is poised to retire by the end of 2021.
When the Board of Education (BOE) convened at the high school on July 21, impassioned public comment and board conversations covering a range of topics yielded a meeting that went on for more than five hours. During that time, the school and local community sounded off about Dr. Dori Alvich’s retirement, effective Nov. 1.
The announcement drew suspicion, questions and fervent support for the superintendent, with several residents, parents and district alumni itemizing everything Alvich has accomplished since assuming the role July 1, 2019, and registering their surprise that she would voluntarily leave the district less than a year since her contract was extended through 2024. ....

MONROE – The construction of a much-needed Applegarth Elementary School may be on the horizon.
In February, the Monroe Board of Education (BOE) approved a resolution to authorize and direct the administration to engage a limited design study to explore design costs for the construction of a new school facility at the site of Applegarth Elementary School, 277 Applegarth Road, similar to the Claremont Elementary School in Franklin Township, Somerset County; and to authorize and direct the district administration to solicit proposals for professional services including, but not limited to, the architect and cost engineers previously contracted by Franklin Township to design Claremont Elementary for reasons of cost, efficiency and consistency. ....

MONROE – The township welcomed five new police officers, bringing the Monroe Township Police Department’s complement to 66.
The new officers graduated from the Cape May Police Academy on July 2, 2020. Police Chief Michael Biennas and Mayor Stephen Dalina introduced the officers on Feb. 24.
Biennas said “the new class of recruits joins a department of highly dedicated law enforcement professionals.”
“We wish them all well in their new roles with the department,” he said.
Richard A. Diaz is a 2012 graduate of Monroe Township High School. He earned his associate’s degree in criminal justice from Brookdale Community College in May 2015. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from New Jersey City University in May 2019. Prior to his employment with the Monroe Township Police Department, Diaz worked at ....
