Arizona virus death toll tops 8K with 2nd-largest daily rise

PHOENIX Arizona’s death toll from the coronavirus outbreak passed the 8,000 mark on Tuesday as the state reported an additional 153 known deaths, the second-highest daily increase during the pandemic.
The 5,869 additional known COVID-19 cases reported Tuesday by the Department of Health Services increased the pandemic’s total to 467,215 cases along with 8,125 deaths.
The number of infections is thought to be far higher than reported because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick.

According to the state coronavirus dashboard, there were 4,019 COVID-19-related hospitalizations as of Monday, the latest in a string of pandemic-highs recorded this month during the fall surge that is continuing into winter. ....

Big changes for holiday events


From “Santa Calls” replacing kids sitting on Kris Kringle’s lap to kids learning on laptops at home, this December has quite a different look—thanks, of course, to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Glendale Elementary and Glendale Union High School districts have closed classrooms and returned to online learning only, Peoria Unified School District and Deer Valley Unified School District continue to teach in classrooms.
That will change, as DVUSD will close classrooms to start the New Year. But the PUSD board will keep Glendale and Peoria classrooms open when 2021 begins.
Since Thanksgiving, COVID-19 transmission has accelerated through the West Valley. According to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, much of Glendale and Peoria is now “in the red,” meaning substantial spread of coronavirus. ....

PHOENIX COVID-19 vaccines arriving in Arizona have been a glimmer of hope for frontline health care workers as they tirelessly battle the pandemic.
But some are telling 12 News they haven’t been able to get an appointment scheduled to get their shot.
Nicole K. is a Valley emergency room critical care nurse and sees COVID-19 patients every day.
“Every shift is extremely challenging,” Nicole said.
On top of working with contagious patients, she also has asthma. ....
