It may be the most watched six hours of early 18 th century history out there, and has likely introduced millions to the true story of Blackbeard and his Caribbean pirate cohort, a fascinating tale I researched and told in a 2007 book, The Republic of Pirates, which is why I was one of the series’ principle on camera experts. ....

An 18th century ship which sank off the coast of Cape Cod was found to have at least six pirate skeletons still aboard. The Boston Globe reports how the wreck is the remains of a ship named the Whydah, which went beneath the waves near the New England town of Wellfleet in the 1700s. Although the ship itself was discovered in 1984, these skeletons are a recent development in the research behind the ship’s story. ....
Just about all searches for the shipwrecks of pirates center on finding their booty – the treasure kind, not their derriere. However, a discovery off the coast of Massachusetts may qualify for a double-booty score in Pirate Scrabble (patent pending) with the announcement that six skeletons were recently recovered from the wreck of the Whydah Gally – the ship belonging to Captain Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy, considered by many to be the most successful pirate in history because of the dozens of ships he plundered 300 years ago. One of those skeletons may belong to Black Sam himself and a team of researchers with the DNA of a bloodline relative aims to find out. ....
