Author: 'Dad recognised connection to the farm'

“One of the unexpected joys of writing the novel was for my dad to read it and recognise that I had made a connection to the farm in my fiction,” said Kildare author, Louise Nealon of her debut novel ‘Snowflake.’
Louise, who previously milked cows to make some money, centered her novel around an 18-year-old woman, who lives on a dairy farm in Kildare with her mother and uncle.
In the book – which is published by Manilla Press, an imprint of Bonnier Books – Debbie’s uncle Billy lives in a caravan in the garden. Her mum Maeve’s grip on reality is increasingly tenuous, and she spends her days recording her dreams which are more real than her daylight hours. This world is Debbie’s normal, but she is about to step into life as a student in Dublin. ....

To mark International Women s Day 2021, we caught up with some of Kildare s most inspiring women. 
Kildare author Louise Nealon, who will celebrate her debut novel being published in May, has hailed the strong women such as her mother, the members of her camogie team and her literary agent.
Louise has also sold the rights to the book to Element Pictures who produced the award-winning BBC hit Normal people adapted from Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel.
Louise, 28, studied English literature in Trinity College Dublin, and then completed a masters in creative writing at Queen’s University Belfast in 2016. ....

When did you first start writing fiction?
I’m not sure about writing fiction, but I was a compulsive liar as a child. I made up wild stories all the time. When my parents divorced, I told my little brother that Mum had locked Dad in the potting shed in our garden. I carried that on for quite a while and used to let him “catch” me smuggling food out to the shed (I was the only one with a key). ....
