New Challenges for Asylum Seekers |

By Marielena Castellanos
Iris Abigail Chacon Flores, who left El Salvador to escape violence, said she will never forget what she felt when she turned herself in to immigration authorities. Chacon Flores said her feet were shackled, her hands shackled. She said what surprised her the most were the shackles placed around her stomach. She was five months pregnant.
“I felt it wasn’t me they were chaining up, but my baby who was the one getting chained up, before it was even born into the world. I felt morally damaged, psychologically, when I was chained up in that manner,” Flores Chacon said. ....

Immigration Judges Take On the Trump Administration |

By Marielena Castellanos
Immigration judges are pushing back against the Trump administration to keep independence in the courtroom as the Trump administration continues to crack down on illegal immigration.
An unusual step was taken last week when a formal grievance was filed against Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Justice Department by the union that represents immigration judges.
The move came after Sessions removed Philadelphia judge Steven Morley from an immigration case, and the Justice Department later removed more than 80 cases from Morley as well.
It started back in May of this year when Morley closed the case of Reynaldo Castro-Tum, an immigrant from Guatemala who came to the United States as an unaccompanied minor back in 2014 when he was 17-years-old, over concerns Castro-Tum had an unreliable mailing address after he didn’t show up for several immigration court appearances. ....

Hundreds gathered in Chicano Park this week for a rally and march through downtown San Diego to call for an end to family separations, the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and to cancel the implementation of Operation Streamline.

Workshop Seeks to Educate Public On How to Vote for Judges |

By Marielena Castellanos
Most politicians have term limits, but judges do not. Judges across the U.S. hold powerful positions, but they are often not well known to the public. Many judges are elected by voters just like mayors, state legislators and members of Congress. But most voters know very little about judges running to be elected.
This week, a diverse group of residents, parents, and students filled a large room at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista to learn about the judicial branch of government and how they can approach voting for judges, as part of a workshop to promote civic education and engagement making its way throughout the state entitled Judge the Judges. ....

Lawsuit to Stop the Separation of Parents and Children Moves On

Lawsuit to Stop the Separation of Parents and Children Moves On
By Marielena Castellanos
A judge approved the advancement of a lawsuit filed in San Diego by the American Civil Liberties Union this week challenging the Trump administration’s policy to separate parents from their children who are caught trying to enter the United States.
On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw denied a motion by the Trump administration to dismiss the lawsuit.
In his ruling, Judge Sabraw called the separation of parents and children brutal and offensive.
“At a minimum, the facts alleged are sufficient to show the government conduct at issue ‘shocks the conscience’ and violates Plaintiffs’ constitutional right to family integrity,” the judge said. ....
