Some New Jersey lawmakers want more information on roughly $21 million in settlements the state reached with current and former inmates at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women.
The lawmakers, in part, want to know whether the settlements involving 20 lawsuits include nondisclosure agreements barring the women from speaking about their time at Edna Mahan.
The taxpayer-funded settlement comes as a bipartisan group wants the removal of New Jersey Department of Corrections Commissioner Marcus Hicks over allegations of abuse and mistreatment of inmates at the Union Township facility.

The alleged abuse that left one woman inmate with a concussion and another in a wheelchair earlier this year happened inside New Jersey s only prison for women on a unit named Restorative Housing.
Advocates for inmates say that unit at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Union Township is not restorative, and, in practice, is the very sort of isolated confinement that was supposed to have been limited under a state law that went into effect Aug. 1.
Now those advocates and inmates are raising questions about compliance amid renewed scrutiny of how well New Jersey oversees its prisons.

A fourth correctional officer has been charged in connection with an assault on at least six inmates, and an attempted coverup of this attack, at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey. The charges result from an incident that took place at the women’s prison in January. The brutality of the incident and the seriousness of the victims’ injuries prompted the state attorney general to open an ongoing investigation. It is the latest in a long series of inquiries concerning the prison.
On February 24, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal charged Sgt. Matthew Faschan with two counts of second-degree official misconduct and one count of third-degree tampering with public records or information. Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal today announced charges against a fourth correctional police officer in the ongoing criminal investigation of an incident in which inmates were assaulted and seriously injured at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in the early morning of Jan. 12, 2021. Three other correctional police officers were charged on Feb. 4.
Sgt. Matthew D. Faschan, 33, of Hackettstown, N.J., a suspended correctional police officer, was charged today by complaint-summons with two counts of second-degree official misconduct and one count of third-degree tampering with public records or information. ....
