Synthetic paper (SP), or plastic paper, can replace woodbased paper (WBP) for textbooks due to its resistance towards water, tearing and staining, and for having a longer life span than WBP. It is also environment-friendly as it is not produced from trees and is 100% recyclable. The weight in grams per square metre (GSM) is the same for both. Hence, the book weight remains the same too. However, SP books will cost four times as much as WBP ones. But, considering SP’s technical advantages, it will be commercially viable when used in school textbooks focusing on long-term applications. ....

In a joint press conference addressed on Thursday by Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar, GoI unveiled the much-awaited guidelines for over-the-top (OTT) and digital media platforms. The move comes in the wake of a growing chorus of complaints by members of civil society, activists, filmmakers, political leaders and impartial institutions regarding the lack of ethical conduct by OTT and digital news platforms. These complaints have been echoed in some of the judgements of the Supreme Court and a few high courts.
GoI had initially been reluctant to impinge on the freedom of online platforms, and had encouraged them to come out with a self-regulatory code to be enforced by an independent body. Attempts at putting together the independent body to regulate digital platforms fell through, as the proposed body had only industry professionals on board, reducing the credibility of the body. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her budget earlier this month that India will launch its National Hydrogen Energy Mission (NHEM) in 2021-22. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting in November at the Global Renewable Energy Investment Meeting and Expo (RE-Invest) the importance of niche renewable technologies like hydrogen in the renewable energy (RE) mix.
Considering India’s 175 GW target of RE capacity by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030, it is imperative that our energy grid involves other green technologies on a medium-to-long term basis. This will help India lower its emission intensity by 33-35% from the 2005 levels by 2030, another Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) target under the Paris Agreement. ....
