How one local couple overcame infertility to become parents


This week has been National Infertility Awareness Week, and it was also the week those supporting the Tennessee Pro-Family Building Act coming before committees in both houses of the state legislature saw the bill get rolled to next year.
The act, if passed, would require insurance companies to cover infertility treatments for state employees and the fully insured market. Troy resident Katelyn Kelly said she and Tennessee Fertility Advocates look forward to bringing the Tennessee Pro-Family Building Act back to the Capitol next year. In the meantime they plan to continue educating members on the disease of infertility and why they feel this bill is needed to help build families in Tennessee. ....

John Hughes, announced on “Today” Friday that they’re expecting their first child together in June, following a long, emotional fertility journey that tested the couple’s resilience.
“After years and years of trying, I’m having a baby girl with John and we are so excited,” Welker, 44, told the “Today” hosts. “It’s with the help of a surrogate.”
Welker and her husband found out the surrogate was pregnant before Kristen moderated the final presidential debate of 2020. Thinking of her baby, she says, helped keep her calm during the high-stakes debate. ....

A huge congratulations is in order for NBC’s News journalist, Kristen Welker as she announced that she is expecting her first child with her husband, John Hughes.

Infertility Awareness Week helps support those struggling to build a family

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – It’s National Infertility Awareness Week: a time to support and empower those struggling to build a family.
According to the CDC, about one in eight couples have difficulty getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term.
Sanford Health offers a wide variety of evaluation and treatment options for those who’ve experienced a pregnancy loss or are trying to get pregnant but have been unsuccessful.
A fertility specialist says being aware of how to talk with and support those on this journey is crucial.
“It’s not anybody else’s business why you don’t have kids, why you’re waiting to have kids, are you going to have another child; things like that. So, being very aware that some couples are struggling and it’s probably people around you,” Sanford Health Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Specialist Dr. Sheena Rippentrop explained. ....
