KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 The Malaysian Bar has urged the federal government to take decisive action into the phenomenon of custodial deaths in Malaysia, saying that the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) must be formed as soon as possible.
Its president AG Kalidas said an immediate and independent investigation and inquest into the death of cow milk trader A. Ganapathy must be conducted, following his death on April 18 at Selayang Hospital. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 The Malaysian Bar has initiated legal proceedings against the Malaysian government seeking five court declarations against provisions within the Emergency (Essential Powers) 2021 Ordinance (EO) they claim are either overbroad or unconstitutional.
A statement issued by Bar president AG Kalidas today noted how the issuance of these Emergency Ordinances has created an imbalance between the levels of power and accountability they are subjected to. ....

The Malaysian government should condemn a cabinet minister’s proposal to crack down harder on LGBT+ communities, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said.
Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, the deputy minister in charge of religious affairs, suggested last week that the government should consider amending a section of the country’s Syariah Courts act to impose heavier penalties agains the LGBT+ people.
Currently, LGBT+ people face three-year imprisonment, a RM5,000 (approximately £900) fine and six strokes of the cane under the act. But Mr Shaary told reporters that increasing punishments “would prevent them from committing more offences”. ....
