Malaysian Bar calls for investigation into Ganapathy's custodial death

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar has called for an immediate and independent investigation and inquest into the death of A. Ganapathy in police custody.
The Bar also reiterated their call for an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) and Coroner s Act.
This is a matter of great public concern and warrants the highest priority. A thorough and transparent investigation must be conducted in order to uncover the facts surrounding his death, Malaysian Bar president AG Kalidas said in a statement on Saturday (May 1).
Kalidas added that in times like these, the need for the formation of the IPCMC to act as an external and independent civilian oversight body to investigate complaints about police personnel, cannot be overstated. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 The Malaysian Bar has urged the federal government to take decisive action into the phenomenon of custodial deaths in Malaysia, saying that the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) must be formed as soon as possible.
Its president AG Kalidas said an immediate and independent investigation and inquest into the death of cow milk trader A. Ganapathy must be conducted, following his death on April 18 at Selayang Hospital. ....

The reported rape of a 16-year-old girl in the Miri police station lock-up has led to many calling for a review of detention rules and abuses in police custody.
Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto said in a statement that in the first place, police should know it is in their standard operating procedures that children are not allowed to be detained in a police lock-up.
The victim was arrested by police for alleged involvement in illegal online gambling activities.
She was reportedly raped by a male detainee in the lock-up on Jan 9. The victim and her father lodged a police report on Saturday. ....

Dewan Rakyat adjourns sine die, 10 bills passed

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The third meeting of the third term of the 14th Parliament adjourned sine die on Friday (Dec 18), after sitting for 29 days from Nov 2, with 10 bills tabled and passed, including the Supply Bill 2021.
Also passed in this session were the Finance Bill 2020; Temporary Measures for Government Financing (Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) (Amendment) Bill 2020; Customs (Amendment) Bill 2020; and Excise (Amendment) Bill 2020.
Others are the Free Zones (Amendment) Bill 2020; Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2020; Service Tax (Amendment) Bill 2020; Tourism Tax (Amendment) Bill 2020; and Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill 2020.
Meanwhile, the second and third readings of five bills initially scheduled for Friday in the Dewan Rakyat have been postponed to the next sitting, based on the Parliament’s Standing Order Number 62. ....
