Penelope Teen Killed In Crash Near Bynum

A crash near Bynum claimed the life of a 16-year-old Tuesday, May 18.
According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. on State Highway 171 near Farm Road 1243, northwest of Bynum.
A Ford F-350 pickup traveling southbound attempted to pass a vehicle that had reduced its speed to turn. As the Ford entered the northbound lane to pass, it crashed into a truck-tractor traveling northbound, according to DPS.
The driver of the Ford, a 16-year-old male, was transported to Hill Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The teenager was identified as Patrick Kucera, a sophomore at Penelope High School. ....

COVID-19 Vaccine Approved For Youth Ages 12 And Over
The Texas Department of State Health Services has notified vaccine providers that they can begin to administer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to adolescents from 12 to 15 years old, in line with federal guidance.
The notice comes after the Food and Drug Administration authorized the vaccine for adolescents last week and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended it for that age group.
In Hill County, just under 30 percent of those 16 and up are fully vaccinated, and 36 percent have received one dose of a vaccine.
The local vaccination rate is highest among those 65 years of age and older. In this age group, almost 64 percent of Hill County residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine, and about 56 percent are fully vaccinated. ....

The Hillsboro Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its 99th annual awards banquet Friday, May 14, at the HILCO Civic and Event Center in Itasca.

Hill Regional To Administer 2nd Vaccine Doses
Hill Regional Hospital is reminding those who have received first doses of COVID-19 vaccines of the dates to return for their second shots.
Those who received Moderna vaccines from Hill Regional Hospital at the Hill County Fairgrounds on April 14, are reminded that their second doses will be given Thursday, May 13, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Those who received Pfizer vaccines on Wednesday, April 21, are scheduled for second doses to be administered Friday, May 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Appointments for those not yet vaccinated are available by visiting www.hillregionalhospital.com. Registering online is preferred, but those who are unable to do so may sign up by phone. ....

Week Begins With Severe Storms, Tornado
Storms rolled through the county Monday night, May 3, leading to a confirmed tornado and a house fire that was suspected to have started due to lightning.
At just after 7 p.m., Hill County storm spotters were activated with radar-detected rotation in a thunderstorm near Blum. Spotters confirmed two funnel clouds in the area. Heavy rain and hail accompanied the storms, with round one affecting mainly northern Hill County into Johnson County.
A tornado warning was issued, and damage was reported in several areas along HCR 1106 into Rio Vista and was still being assessed as of The Reporter Newspaper s press time Tuesday morning. ....
