The US Department of the Interior (DOI) has given the green light to the construction of a utility-scale solar-plus-storage project on public land in California.
The DOI announced on Monday (3 May) that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has given final approval to the Crimson Solar Project, a 350MW solar PV array with a 350MW/1,400MWh energy storage system that will generate power through the Southern California Edison Colorado River Substation.
The project will be owned by renewables company Sonoran West Solar Holdings, a subsidiary of utility-scale developer Recurrent Energy and Canadian Solar. It will be built on 2,500 acres of Federal land in Riverside County, according to an impact statement, and is expected to require an investment of US$500 million. The DOI said in a s ....

World's first GW-scale battery project unveiled in Australia in snub to gas-fixated government

The right-wing Liberal/National coalition government has said it plans to build a gas-fired power plant of up to 1GW in Kurri Kurri through state-owned utility Snowy Hydro to make up for the 2GW of baseload generating capacity the area will lose when the nearby Liddell coal-fired power station is closed in 2023.
But this gas facility may not be financially viable if the 1.2GW battery which will be charged by local solar power gets the go-ahead.
The issue has a large political dimension. The federal government is pushing for greater use of natural gas in electricity generation, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison telling journalists last year that there was “no credible energy transition plan for an economy like Australia that does not involve the greater use of gas”. ....

The world’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) so far has gone into operation in Monterey County, California, US retail electricity and power generation company Vistra said yesterday.
Phase 1 of Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility was connected to the power grid and began operating on 11 December 2020, at the site of Moss Landing Power Plant, a natural gas power station owned by Vistra since it acquired the facility’s previous owner, Dynegy in 2018.
At 300MW / 1,200MWh, the BESS is considerably larger than the 250MW / 250MWh Gateway Energy Storage project brought online earlier this year by LS Power, also in California. Not only that, but Phase 2 of Vistra’s project will add another 100MW / 400MWh and is scheduled for completion by August this year. ....
