Columbus School District anticipates $11.23 per $1,000 valuation tax asking

COLUMBUS JUNCTION Several decisions related to the district’s Fiscal Year 2022 budget, including approval to publish the proposed document, highlighted the Columbus School Board’s regular monthly meeting Monday.
The proposed budget that was approved for publication showed total expenditures, transfers out and other uses of $13.24 million and total revenue and other sources of $11.73 million.
The proposed budget’s beginning fund balance on July 1, 2021, is projected to be $6.26 million and the anticipated ending balance on June 30, 2022, to be $4.75 million.
The published proposal also showed an anticipated tax rate of just under $11.47 per $1,000 taxable valuation, which would compare with this year’s rate of $11.22. ....

MUSCATINE – While sitting on the couch that served as a place for her to sleep the previous night, Kimberly Fitch looks back on 2020 and marvels at how much could change in such a short time.
Fitch says she and her three children are in a much better situation than they were when the lived in upstate New York at the beginning of the year. Still, in New York the family lived in a house and had friends they could call. Now, having lived in Muscatine since the beginning of July, the family is starting over.
“We were staying in a domestic violence safe house and my mom (Katharina Fitch) came to get us,” she said. “She lives in Iowa. When we came here it was just with whatever fit in my mom’s trunk — just personal items and clothes.” ....

Columbus Junction School Board appoints Darin Mapel to replace Jayme Storm

COLUMBUS JUNCTION Darin Mapel of Columbus Junction was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Jayme Storm on the Columbus School Board during the board’s regular monthly meeting Monday, according to board secretary Neil Mills.
Storm, who was elected to board in 2019, announced last month she needed to resign from the board because she and her family had moved out of the district. After accepting her resignation, the school board agreed to fill the vacancy with an appointment.
Mapel will serve the remaining three years of Storm’s original term, as well as on the finance/negotiations and activities/athletic committees, where Storm also served, Mills reported. ....
