The ‘Yahoo-Yahoo’ business, formally known as cyber fraud in Nigeria’s cybercrime law, is not a new phenomenon in the country.
The illicit business, mostly perpetrated by young men and sometimes women, is an offshoot of the so-called ‘419’ business of the 1980s and 1990s.
The 419 code is derived from a section of the country’s Criminal Act Section 419 (Advance Free Fraud) which frowns at obtaining money from people through pretence or impersonation, cheating, falsification, counterfeiting, forgery and fraudulent representation of facts.
Internet fraud has now been here for decades and does not seem to be declining in spite of the government’s efforts to stem the tide of the crime that has given the country a bad reputation. ....

Nigerians pay billions of naira to DisCos despite frequent outages

While the customer base has improved to over 10 million, according to enumeration records submitted to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), power outages, rationing and low voltage are still prevalent among consumers.
Analysis of revenue collection by the DisCos in 2019 shows that they improved the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) yearly collection by N39 billion, reaching a total of N485 billion, with a collection efficiency of 69 per cent.
According to revenue records released by the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), by the first quarter of 2020, DisCos had realised N127bn, which was over 10 per cent improvement than their quarterly collection of 2019. ....

Nigerian Navy’s newest Offshore Survey Vessel, NNS LANA this afternoon, 30 April 2021, departed Las Palmas, Spain, for Banjul, Gambia on the third leg of its homeward voyage to Nigeria. The ship will be received by a Nigerian Navy delegation headed by Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan and officials of the Nigerian High Commission in Gambia. The vessel is expected to arrive Banjul, Gambia on 4 May 2021 before proceeding to Tema, Ghana.
