ROCKVILLE, MD Damon Monteleone is leaving his role as principal of Richard Montgomery High School for a new position as assistant chief of the Office of Teaching, Learning and Schools for the Montgomery County Public School District.
The school board approved his appointment at its meeting Thursday afternoon. The district will begin the process of looking for Monteleone s successor at Richard Montgomery High School. ....

Board of Education Discusses Best Ways to Replace Police Officers in Schools
Members of the Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education (BOE) spent Tuesday afternoon discussing how best to keep students safe without having a daily police presence in the schools. This after County Executive Marc Elrich removed funding for the School Resource Officers program.
“The decision has been taken out of our hands,” said BOE Member Patricia O’Neill.
The BOE intends to review the findings of Elrich’s Reimagining School Safety task force and Councilmembers Will Jawando and Craig Rice’s plan on how best include mental health professionals and other support services rather than have police officers in schools everyday. The BOE will incorporate that information with its own research gathered from a focus group, recommendations from stakeholders, data from previous years and information from the 125 emails the Board received on the subject. ....

MCPS Expected to Offer Five-Day-a-Week In-Person Learning This Fall
Multiple times during Tuesday afternoon’s meeting of the Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education (BOE), school administration staff repeated that there will be a five-day-a-week in-school program in the fall, with a virtual academy offered to those who request them. This will be accomplished using a social distancing guideline of three feet.
The BOE also discussed graduation plans, student waiting lists and summer school.
All high schools will have outdoor graduation ceremonies on their respective campuses. MCPS will provide the caps, gowns and yard signs for the 12,000 students expected to graduate at the end of this school year.  It also will pay for rental of chairs, tents and other graduation day supplies. Each student will be permitted to invite two guests. ....

Council Meets Virtually: The Montgomery County Council meets at 9 a.m. and here’s a look at the agenda for the meeting. Teachers Vote No Confidence on Return to School Plans; Superintendent Is ‘Perplexed’
Elected worksite representatives from the Montgomery County Education Association “overwhelmingly passed a resolution stating a lack of confidence” with Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education’s unanimous vote to return to the classroom beginning in March. MCEA also asked for a meeting with the BOE.
In the resolution, the teachers union called MCPS’ plans inadequate and demanded that all school employees have the opportunity to get vaccinated before returning to the buildings. The resolution also asks that a “coherent” contract tracing weekly diagnostic testing plans be put in place before anyone returns to the classroom. ....
