Marathon council endorses options for code enforcement

The Marathon City Council agreed to create a hybrid model for code enforcement and continued the trash receptacle ordinance to next month, while approving the Coco Plum bridge projects and the kayak ramp on Grassy Key to move forward this month. Rotary Park will receive a facelift as well.
The council agreed to a hybrid model for code enforcement in which residents have the option to choose between a code board made up of their neighbors and friends or an impartial, law school-trained special magistrate. The vote was split, with John Bartus, Mayor Luis Gonzalez and Dan Zieg in favor of the hybrid model. Zieg said 80% to 90% of cases are resolved before ever coming to the magistrate. Bartus said the cityâs incorporation movement two decades ago had a code board comprised of citizens among its most desired goals, and a hybrid system is the âbest of both worlds.â ....

Public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane on Thursday stepped into the dock of the Pretoria regional court.
Dressed in a red suit, she seemed oblivious to the media contingent about her and casually engaged in conversation with her lawyer, Dali Mpofu.
The case was swiftly postponed to March 25.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) asked for the postponement for “the management and resolution of pretrial issues”. ....

MUMBAI: Nine years after a 50-year-old Ghatkopar man flung acid on his wife’s face, leaving her visually impaired in one eye, a magistrate court recently convicted and sentenced him to three years’ rigorous imprisonment. The man has also been ordered to pay Rs 40,000 to the woman, a mother of three and a social worker. The accused, Nagnath Jadhav, attacked his wife, Shubhangi Jadhav, as he believed she was involved in an affair.
“It seems that the offence was committed in order to teach a lesson to the informant (the victim) as she had relations with (one) Sameer but this fact is not proved. The informant has two boys and one girl. The children are with the informant. Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, it seems that the aggravating circumstances are on a higher footing. Therefore, deterrent punishment has to be awarded to him,” the court said. ....
