Foundation for Black Women's Wellness supports Black women during pandemic · The Badger Herald

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing racial healthcare disparities.
In an attempt to lessen those disparities, the foundation partnered with the Public Health Madison and Dane County to promote community COVID-19 safety education, mask distribution, expanded testing and quality care and access for highly impacted communities, Stevenson said.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, communities of color experience higher rates of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. Though Black residents make up only 6.4% of the state’s population, they account for a total of 11.8% of COVID-19 hospitalizations.
A cause for this disparity is the stress and tension Black individuals face in their daily lives due to societal inequities, which McGranahan said can impact their immune system through epigenetics. ....

As Wisconsin student body grows more diverse, government must empower teachers of color · The Badger Herald

With the waves of racial justice extending from Black Lives Matter last summer and fall, to the current Stop Asian Hate on the street and social media, the current generation has begun to realize the importance and the necessity of diversity, equity and inclusion.
This realization has been extremely important for educational institutions, regardless of whether they are private or public schools. In the election of the Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction, all candidates shared making educational equity a priority.
Primarily, it is important to understand what it means to have educational equity. Conservative law firm demands ministers see prisoners
April 1, 2021
FacebookTwitterEmail
MADISON, Wis. (AP) A conservative law firm wants state corrections officials to relax COVID-19 safety protocols and allow volunteer ministers to visit prison inmates.
The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty sent a letter Thursday to Department of Corrections Secretary Kevin Carr complaining about the no-visitor policy the department adopted in March 2020 as the pandemic was taking hold. The firm argued that the policy bars volunteer ministers from visiting inmates, amounting to a violation of state law that gives clergy the right to visit inmates at least weekly and is likely unconstitutional. ....
