Oxford Film Festival presents Ronzo Awards


OXFORD - In a nod to a beloved supporter of independent films, the 18th annual Oxford Film Festival on Sunday presented the first Ronzos to winning films at this year s festival.
The Ronzos are named for the late Ron Ronzo Shapiro, who promoted independent films through his Hoka Theatre from the 1970s until it closed in 1997 and was a supporter of the film festival. Shapiro died in 2019.
The Sunday ceremony wrapped up a week of outdoor film screenings as part of this year s hybrid festival format. The festival today goes virtual as all entries, including the Ronzo winners, can be viewed online. To order films on demand, visit https://www.ox-film.com. ....

“News of the World” and “Sound of Metal” led all films in nominations for the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, the MPSE announced on Monday. The two films each received three nominations in the seven Golden Reel film categories, including in the Feature Effects/Foley category, the MPSE category that most closely corresponded to the Oscars’ Best Sound Editing category.
(This year, the Academy has merged what were two sound categories, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, into a single Best Sound category.) ....

Robert Werden, Longtime Academy Awards Publicist, Dies at 94

He did PR for the Oscars from 1975 to 1993, was a member of the Academy s foreign-language and documentary committees for more than a decade and was a judge for its Nicholl Fellowships and Student Film Awards.
Born in Brooklyn, Werden served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and survived the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944.
He earned his bachelor s and master s degrees in public relations from Boston University, then managed key accounts for such clients as Dodge, Dr. Pepper, FTD and the Texas Democratic Party while at Grant Advertising.
Werden started in movie and television publicity at U.S. Borax and worked on the syndicated TV series ....
