'Start believing us': Sexual Assault Awareness Month prompts campus and city events

On the fourth floor of Alkek Library, a quote from an anonymous student and sexual assault survivor displayed in the Students Against Violence (SAV) installation reads, Start believing us. It doesn’t matter if he was a ‘nice guy’ and your experience is different. What he did to me was real.
To bring awareness to sexual assault on college campuses, Students Against Violence (SAV) created an art installation titled Like The Back of My Hand on the fourth floor of Alkek Library — an interactive fixture that allows sexual assault survivors to anonymously paint on the back of a 3D printed hand the age they were assaulted, how they were related to their assailant and what action the community can take to better support survivors. ....

Mayor Fischer kicks off Youth Violence Prevention Week with a call to action for Louisvillians


Mayor Greg Fischer is encouraging everyone in Louisville to act as part of the kickoff to National Youth Violence Prevention Week.NYVPW is an initiative designed to raise awareness about youth violence, highlight prevention strategies, and intervene in violence that happens to young people. The national effort is organized by the Connecticut-based group Students Against Violence Everywhere. Locally, youth in the community have spearheaded a series of week-long events through Metro Government’s Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods in partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools, Metro United Way, YouthBuild, and a host of other community organizations and groups. A variety of virtual and in-person events will be held to foster open dialogue about Louisville’s gun violence and its impact on youth. These include virtual art shows, spoken word and anti-violence campaigns, and a town hall discussion. Each day has its own theme designed to amplify violence as a communit ....
