CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) A University of Illinois dance professor has received a 2021 United States Artists Fellowship.
In a new release, the news bureau of the Urbana-Champaign campus says that Cynthia Oliver is one of 60 fellows for the year and one of just five fellows in the field of dance. The award comes with an unrestricted $50,000 cash award.
Oliver joined the U of I dance department in 2000 after spending years as a choreographer and dancer with several professional companies. Since joining the faculty, she has continued to perform and has received a number of awards, including the New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Award for choreography and a 2016 Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography Mellon fellowship. ....

United States Artists Recognize Idris Goodwin, Basil Kincaid '10

Basil Kincaid ’10, a CC art major, multi-media artist, and recent visiting artist at the college  have been named members of the United States Artists’ 2021 Class of Fellows. This year 60 artists were chosen.
Goodwin, an award-winning playwright who took over as director of the FAC last year, was recognized in the theater and performance category. Kincaid, who graduated from CC with a concentration in Studio Art and an emphasis on drawing and painting, was honored in the traditional arts category. Each will receive a $50,000 unrestricted cash prize.
Goodwin and Kincaid are the second and third artists affiliated with Colorado College to be recognized by United States Artists. Stephen Scott, a CC professor of music and composer and founder of CC’s Bowed Piano Ensemble, was honored in 2008. ....

New Haven Musician Wadada Leo Smith Named 2021 United States Artists Fellow

Avant-garde jazz trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith has been named a 2021 United States Artists Fellow. United States Artists is a national arts funding organization based in Chicago.
Like all performers, Smith’s touring schedule came to an abrupt halt last March. He says that disruption has resulted in one of the most fruitful periods of his creative life.
“Since then, just a casual count, I did at least 25 Ankhrasmation scores, some as big as 40 inches by 32 inches, some are 30 inches by 20 inches. I’ve also written a suite for a new ensemble, which has yet to perform,” said Smith. ....

Neptune, who works in traditional arts, is among this year s 60 recipients of the $50,000 award from United States Artists.

Before celebrating a $50,000 United States Artists fellowship, Passamaquoddy two-spirit Geo Soctomah Neptune paused to remember their grandmother, the nationally famous basketmaker Molly Neptune Parker, who died in June.
“She was my teacher and mentor, and she was the head of my family and my best friend,” Neptune said. “She would have been one of the first people I would have told. But she is looking down, and I am sure she is very excited wherever she is.” ....
