Watch England's Euro 2020 match outside, urges Greater Manchester mayor

The mayor of Greater Manchester has encouraged residents in the north-west of England to water down their plans for England’s Euro 2020 football match against Croatia this weekend after a surge in cases of coronavirus.
Andy Burnham said people in Lancashire and Greater Manchester should aim to “minimise” the number of people they watch the match with on Sunday.
It comes after the Government recommended that people living in certain areas which have seen a rise in cases of a coronavirus variant first identified in India should now meet outside rather than inside where possible, keep up social distancing and minimise travel in and out of affected regions. ....

Covid hotspot Bolton will keep two-visitor limit on care homes

Care homes in Covid hotspot Bolton have been told to hold fire on plans to permit more visitors next week amid surging cases of the Indian variant.
Schools in the Greater Manchester borough are also urging pupils and staff to keep wearing masks in classrooms next week, despite the measure due to be scrapped nationally on Monday.
The next step in Boris Johnson s roadmap out of lockdown says care home residents will be allowed five named visitors from May 17, up from the two currently permitted.
But councillors and public health leaders in Bolton have taken matters into their own hands after the local infection rate more than doubled in the last week week. ....

A waterside orchard has been planted to combat flood risk in Prestolee and Nob End Locks.

THE power of nature is being harnessed to help guard against flooding.
A new waterside community orchard and woodland has been planted along a canal towpath on a slope between the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal and the River Irwell, to improve biodiversity and to combat the flood risk for residents around Prestolee and Nob End Locks.
The £8,800 project has involved covering two hectares of scrubland with fruit trees to improve soil stability, increase biodiversity and limit the impact of harmful non-native species, like giant hogweed
The work has been undertaken by The Canal and River Trust, the Environment Agency and volunteers from the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal Society ....

Landmark barge feature in Radcliffe is shipshape once again

A GROUP of volunteers has come together to restore a Radcliffe landmark.
Headed up by Eric and Tracy Owen of Little Britain Anglers alongside Radcliffe Litter Pickers and using a grant from the Bury Community Fund, work has been taking place to spruce up the model of a canal barge on Water Street.
The barge reflects Radcliffe’s heritage as a major stop on the The Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal, which is now culverted under Water Street.
“It has been repainted and flowers have been planted,” said Gill Smith, of Radcliffe Litter Pickers. “ A bridge has also been added so it looks like the barge is coming out of a tunnel.” ....
