Pfizer-BioNTech changes freezer protocol; Canada says itâs confident in vaccine deliveries through mid-April
Pfizer-BioNTech says it has officially requested that Health Canada change the label on the COVID-19 vaccine to reflect that it is now safe to store it for up to two weeks in regular freezers.
The vaccine has until now been shipped and stored in ultra-low-temperature freezers until just before it is injected.
At a briefing today, Maj. Gen. Dany Fortin, the military commander in charge of the federal vaccine distribution program, said if Health Canada follows suit it will give the provinces more flexibility in where they can use the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. It has been limited to a smaller number of sites because there are only so many freezers capable of keeping it at the right temperature. ....

Since vaccinations began with much fanfare on Dec. 14, Quebec has, on average, provided the first dose to only about 33,000 people per week. In total, just under 300,000 doses have been administered.
The pace should pick up in coming weeks.
On Monday, the federal government said it expects the single largest vaccine shipment to Canada this week.
For Quebec, that will translate into 91,260 Pfizer-BioNTech doses.
And for the following six weeks, the average weekly delivery to the province should number 102,000 doses, Ottawa says.
In total, between now and April 4, Quebec expects 705,510 vaccine Pfizer-BioNTech doses, as well as at least 28,500 Moderna vaccine doses ....
