Local nonprofit launches project to change image of Grand Rapids southeast side

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Born and raised in the the city’s Southeast side, Ericka “Kyd Kane” Thompson says this is her home.
“We’re doing beautiful things,” said Kane.
However, the way in which she thinks of her community doesn’t always align with the way in which other people think of it.
Grand Rapids’ southeast side, which is majority minority, has long been associated with violent crime and other issues related to inequality and inequity.
“When you leave a neighborhood behind and isolate them from opportunities, quality education, and something that so many areas of the city have, you will see more things like crime and poverty… something that’s going to breed less-than-optimal things,” said Kane. ....

Partners offer $55K gift card program to help minority-owned businesses

Consumers Energy is partnering with the Michigan Municipal League Foundation on a gift card program that will let customers double their spending at 40 minority-owned businesses in the Grand Rapids area.
Consumers said this week it made a $55,000 contribution to the Michigan Municipal League Foundation that will let the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Grand Rapids Area Black Businesses provide $25 Mastercard gift cards to 40 of their member businesses.
Under the program, which kicked off Friday, patrons who spend a minimum of $25 at a participating location will receive a $25 Mastercard gift card that can be applied to their purchase or spent at any of the participating businesses. Each business will receive an equal number of gift cards for distribution, but supplies are limited and are expected to sell out quickly. ....

City’s micro-local business program improves equity in river restoration

Since the city of Grand Rapids launched its Micro-Local Business Enterprise (MLBE) registration program in July 2020, the program has proven successful in creating a more equitable pool of businesses seeking Grand River (Owashtanong) restoration contracts.
The MLBE program currently has 77 total companies across 34 industries including construction, landscaping and tourism. The newly registered businesses account for a 57% increase since July. Many of the businesses are minority- and woman-owned.
The program’s primary goals include:
