Letters: Disappointing to see only one female candidate running for crime commissioner role

Crime candidates
I HAVE been disappointed to see that, in the upcoming elections on May 6, there is only one female candidate standing in North Yorkshire. We have now had two women prime ministers and currently have 219 women MPs, so, I had hoped to see more representation in our local candidates.
I have been following Alison Hume’s campaign for Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner with interest. Alison has made several pledges, addressing issues critical for North Yorkshire, including drug dealing and wildlife crime. She is also the only candidate who has pledged to tackle violence against women and girls.
In North Yorkshire, the charge rate for domestic abuse-related crime last year was just four per cent, compared to nine per cent across the whole of England and Wales. This disparity is shocking, and needs to be fixed. Following the events of the past few months, I know many women are on high alert and are feeling unsafe on the streets, particularly at night. ....

The St. Bonaventure University Board of Trustees are expected to consider renaming the Administration Building later this year.
The board of trustees voted to remove the name Hopkins Hall at its summer meeting after The Bona Venture revealed its namesake, Msgr. James Hopkins, was credibly accused of sexual abuse.
Some signage bearing the Hopkins name still exists on the campus.
There is no urgency in changing the name and it will not be addressed until the fall board of trustees meeting at the earliest, according to Tom Missel, St. Bonaventure University’s chief communications officer. ....

Model makers: How engineers saved the fall, spring semesters
January 28, 2021
As the spring semester begins, a team of engineering students and faculty has finished tweaking the master schedule, using lessons they learned last fall during their heroic effort to help Cornell have safe, in-person classes.
University leaders faced a critical question in April 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic surged and they contemplated an in-person fall semester: Would it even be possible? ....
