LONDON, May 28, 2021 Shalom friends!
I am writing while on my last official day of quarantine (hopefully) from my mother’s flat in London. I feel so grateful finally to be here after so much time and distance; to be with family and to celebrate the Bar Mitzvah of the son of good friends this Shabbat. So far, I have not stepped foot outside this building!
Every Friday morning, my mother gets her weekly copy of The Jewish Chronicle, delivered along with The Times and I have been reading it with considerable alarm. Almost every story is one that relates to the sharp and shocking increase in incidents of anti-Semitism since the awful escalation of violence in Israel and Gaza.

The Tattooed Torah is an animated film that is based on the renowned children’s book by Marvell Ginsburg. This book has been educating children about the Holocaust for over 30 years. The book recounts the true story of the rescue and restoration of a small Torah from Brno, Czechoslovakia, and teaches the Holocaust not only as a period of destruction but also as an opportunity for redemption. The story of the Tattooed Torah is a profound story of love, bonds across generations, tradition, and resilience. But most of all, it’s a story of hope.
The adaptation of The Tattooed Torah into an animated short film is a three-generation endeavor. It was initiated by Marvell’s daughter, Beth Kopin, who had the dream of transforming this book into a film, and is one of the executive producers. Beth will be joined by the film’s producer (our very own Boulderite) Lisa Effress, director Marc Bennett, animator Christian Robins, film editor John Polk,
